Mission Statement
California Queer History is a digital humanities project on a mission to preserve, archive, and share the rich and diverse narratives of queer history within the State of California. Our mission is deeply rooted in the belief that understanding, documenting, and preserving queer pasts is essential to enriching California’s diverse history, past, present, and future.
What We Do
Archival Collection
Visiting and consulting archives across the United States for information and records on Californian queer activism
Community Engagement
Working alongside of the California queer community to document and preserve queer history.
Educational Programs
Spreading the word about California’s queer history through speaking engagements and presentations.
Exhibits
Creating physical and digital exhibits on significant organizations, people, and events in California’s queer history.
Mapping & Timeline
Creating a digital map of important sites in California’s queer history and an interactive timeline of significant events in California queer history.
Oral History
Conducting oral history interviews with California queer activists in order to preserve their history. Transcribing these interviews and making content within them publicly available, with interviewee permission.
